At The Point Pediatric Dentistry, your child’s comfort and safety are always our highest priorities. IV sedation is one of the options we may recommend to help your child feel calm and relaxed during their dental treatment. This form of sedation is administered intravenously, allowing for quick and effective results that are carefully monitored by our trained dental professionals.

When Is IV Sedation Recommended?

IV sedation in Bluffdale, Utah, is often recommended for children who experience high levels of anxiety, have a strong gag reflex, require extensive dental work or are very young and unable to sit still for long periods. It allows your child to remain in a deeply relaxed state, often unaware of the procedure itself, while our pediatric dentists and team perform the necessary treatment efficiently and safely.

Preparing for IV Sedation

Before your child’s appointment, Dr. Emily Austin or Dr. Michael Tew will review your child’s medical history and ask for details about any allergies, medications or past reactions to anesthesia. It is very important to share any recent changes in your child’s health. If your child is sick on the day of the appointment, we may need to reschedule.

We recommend dressing your child in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Please ensure that they use the restroom before arriving. To ensure safety during sedation, do not allow your child to eat solid foods or drink milk after midnight before the procedure. Only clear liquids should be given in the six hours leading up to the appointment and greasy or heavy foods should be avoided. If your child uses an asthma inhaler, please bring it to the appointment.

As a parent or legal guardian, you must remain in the office during the entire procedure.

After the Appointment

Following IV sedation, your child will likely feel drowsy for several hours. Monitor them closely during this time. Your child should lie on their side with their chin up and you should wake them every hour to offer small sips of clear liquids to avoid dehydration.

When they are ready to eat, start with a light, bland meal. If your child vomits, assist them by turning their head to the side to prevent choking.
